Everyone should incorporate these self-care practices into their routine.
Fashion and style are not one in the same. While fashion is often driven by trends, style goes beyond what is happening at the moment. Take a look at my five roles of style below:
- Tailor (almost) everything
TAILORING MATTERS…I cannot emphasize this enough! The reality is, most people are not sample size with perfectly symmetrical bodies so usually it's rare that clothing items fit our bodies perfectly. Business and formal wear specifically usually always need tweaks by the tailor (and if you are a nut like me I usually have my dress shirts darted, coats taken in and jeans adjusted). The key to tailoring is, like your barber, find a good tailor, build a relationship and stick with them. I have been going to the same tailor for years and he knows exactly how I like my pieces to fit.
- Invest in your shoe game
Listen people, your shoes matter, and I am not just saying that because I own a ridiculous and unnecessary amount of them; I’m saying it because…it’s true! I have seen the most beautifully tailored suits and the best streetwear looks RUINED by messed up and/or cheap shoes. Look, if you have to prioritize where to put your money when it comes to your wardrobe, invest in your shoes first. A pair of Ferragamo’s will make your Zara suit look more expensive – it doesn’t work that other way around.
- Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize!
Accessories also matter. Where many a person falls off is the inability to appropriately/effectively accessorize…or worse, neglecting accessories all together. I get it accessorizing can be scary or simply something that is not front of mind for most, but it does not have to be over the top. Lean into the items that speak most to you and how you live. For instance, I am not a big jewelry guy. I wear the same Hermes bracelets all of the time, along with a watch. I love sunglasses and feel like they can really uplevel a look, so I tend to have fun with them, as well as shoes and seasonally appropriate accessories like scarves and beanies in fall/winter.
- Don’t skimp on scents
OK, looking good is great, but smelling good is also just as important. Some say to go light on the amount of fragrance you put on, but I slightly disagree. While one shouldn’t smell like they drunk a bottle of cologne before leaving the house, I tend to put on an extra few squirts just to up the effect (I have never had a complaint). Also, while experimenting with different scents can be fun, also have your go-to, signature scent/brand that speaks most to you. For me I am a huge fan of Tom Ford scents (really Tom Ford everything), and I tend to wear a scent from that brand.
- Don’t take your style too seriously
At the end of the day, fashion should be fun. It should be a way for people to express themselves and their personalities and shouldn’t cause more stress than enjoyment. Don’t take it too seriously, the good thing about wearing a bad outfit is that it’s one of the easiest things in life to change.
