Style and practicality can actually cohabitate nicely.
To some, Jerry Lorenzo represents sort of a new guard in the fashion industry. But in fact, his Fear of God label has been one of the most innovative in the industry for the past decade. While he has achieved great success since starting the brand, expanding to womenswear and kidswear, collaborating with mega brands like Adidas, and establishing somewhat of a cult following with his Essentials line, Lorenzo had never put forth a traditional fashion show, until now. The brand presented its first fashion show at the famed Hollywood Bowl, treating the thousands of spectators to both mens and womenswear from the fall 2023 collection.
The collection was an ode to many things: classic American luxury, the trials and triumphs of the black community, the intersection of [black] music and fashion, and not to be forgotten, all of the fashion elements that Jerry Lorenzo does so well. He presented a clear, concise and focused collection centered around well-made, staple pieces one can easily dress up or down. Suiting and super-precise tailoring undergirded many of the collections looks, often topped with statement coats in a variety of textures and fabrics. Silhouettes were varied, but oversized outwear pieces often featured waists synched with multi-layered rope belts (that were personal favorites).
Aside from the main collection, the brand also presented pieces from its collaboration with Adidas. What stood out about pieces from the collaboration was that they did not stand out (and that is a good thing). When brands present multiple clothing lines in the same collection, sometimes the shows can look very disjointed. The Adidas collab pieces, however, seamlessly flowed with looks from the main Fear of God line. Overall, the show was a great lesson presenting a sharp, focused collection that represents the designer's clear point of view. I, for one, look forward to seeing Fear of God's continued rise.
